Use visual cues: edges turning from pink to white means you’re close to flipping
Watch the color change around the edges as a sign the first side is nearing done.
As chicken sears, the outer edge will start turning from pink to white. Use that as a cue that the first side is close to ready (along with the release test).
The short version
- Pink-to-white at edges = getting close.
Why it works
Heat penetrates from the pan upward; edge color change indicates cooking progress through the thickness.

Know when chicken skin will release by shaking the pan
Gently shake the pan; when the chicken is ready, it should release itself from the stainless steel surface.
Avoid adding water to very soft fruits when making powders (spread directly instead)
If a fruit is already very soft, blending it with water can make it too thin and cause it to run through a strainer; spread it directly on the sheet tray instead.
Check roasted beets for doneness by probing for easy slide-out
Beets are done roasting when a probe/thermometer slides in and out easily.
Expect a small end piece to remain in the feed tube when shredding/slicing
When shredding or slicing in a food processor, the last small piece often doesn’t feed through cleanly and may stick near the top.
