How to make horizontal onion slices by changing orientation
Turn the onion and slice across it horizontally to create a different slice shape and thickness.
Instead of slicing in the first direction, rotate/turn the onion and slice it the other way while keeping the same grip and knuckle-guided technique. Adjust thickness as desired.
The short version
- Rotate the onion to change slice direction
- Keep the same safe knuckle guide
What you need
- knife
- cutting board
How to do it
- 1
Turn the onion so you can slice it in the alternate (horizontal) direction.
Keep the onion stable on the board.
Watch this step - 2
Use the same grip and rest the knife against your knuckles.
Maintain fingertip safety.
Watch this step - 3
What goes wrong
Losing grip when changing orientation
Reset your grip before continuing to slice
Why it works
Changing orientation changes the shape of the slices while keeping the same safe hand position.
