How to dry avocado pits so you can peel and grind them

Dry avocado pits until the skin loosens, then peel and process them into usable pieces.

Air-dry avocado pits about a week in a dry climate, or dry them gently with low heat if you live somewhere humid. They’re ready when the outer skin is dry/loose enough to peel off easily. Once peeled, the pit can be chopped and ground.

The short version

  • In humid climates, use low oven heat (~200°F) or a dehydrator instead of air-drying.
  • The pit is dry enough when the skin peels off easily.

What you need

  • oven
    optional
Use low temperature (~200°F) for humid climates
  • dehydrator
    optional
    Alternative to oven/air-drying
  • knifeFor chopping the dried pit

How to do it

  1. 1

Save the avocado pit after using the avocado.

  2. 2

Dry the pit until the skin loosens: air-dry about a week in a dry climate, or dry in a low oven (about 200°F) in humid climates; a dehydrator also works.

Use low heat so it dries slowly.

  3. 3

Check dryness by seeing if the skin peels off easily; peel off the skin.

The peeled pit will look pinkish/orange.

What goes wrong

Trying to peel/grind the pit before it’s fully dried

Dry longer until the skin loosens and peels cleanly.

Using high oven heat to speed drying

Keep the oven low (around 200°F) and dry slowly.

Why it works

Removing moisture makes the pit easier to peel and grind, and low heat/dehydration prevents it from staying tacky in humid conditions.
