Remove any loose dirt with a soft brush like a toothbrush, paintbrush, shaving brush, or pastry brush. Avoid silicon brushes.

Remove any cakes of dirt at the base with a knife.

Wipe down the mushroom cap and stem with a clean damp towel. Optionally, give a quick rinse under running water before wiping dry.

For button or crimini mushrooms, separate the cap from the stem and peel a thin layer off the outside using a paring knife or potato peeler.
