  • 2 1/2 cups All purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon SaltUse less if using fine-grained salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 cup Chocolate chipsGhirardelli recommended
  • 3/4 cup ButterRoom temperature, unsalted
  • 1 2/3 cups Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 5 cups Powdered sugarFor frosting
  • 1 1/2 cups ButterFor frosting
  • 1/4 cup Milk or creamerFor frosting
  • 1/4 teaspoon SaltFor frosting

    Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

    Prepare three 6-inch cake pans or two 8-inch cake pans.

    In a bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder.

    Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer until light and fluffy.

    Add vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing well.

    Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter, mixing on low.

    Toss chocolate chips with a tablespoon of flour and fold into the batter.
