Ingredients
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cayenne pepper(optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric(optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon English mustard powder(optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powderUse 3 teaspoons if using plain flour
  • Self raising flourContains baking powder
  • ButterCold, rub into flour
  • Grated cheeseFold into mixture
  • Full cream milkUse to mix and brush tops

    Preheat oven to 200°C (392°F) or gas mark 6. Adjust to 180°C if fan-assisted.

    Sift dry ingredients: cayenne pepper, turmeric, mustard powder, salt, and baking powder into a bowl.

    Add cold butter and rub into flour until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

    Fold in grated cheese with fingers.

    Add full cream milk and mix with a dinner knife until clumpy.

    Lightly flour worktop, roll dough to 20-25mm thick.

    Cut scones with a 60mm cutter or into squares.

    Place scones on greased baking tray, brush tops with milk, and sprinkle with cheese.

    Bake in preheated oven for 14-17 minutes until golden.

    Cool on a wire rack before serving.
